The Sixties at the Beeb
I've been a music obsessive for more years than I care to remember. I intend to post some of my collection here. However this will be confined to material that is either currently out of print or has never been released.
As a teenager in the 1960s I loved everything, even Engelbert Humperdinck. OK, maybe not Engelbert. Nor Ken Dodd. Nor Andy Williams. Anyway, you get the general idea. Naturally my taste has refined somewhat since then but it's still the music I love the most, especially the British Beat groups.
This is why my first choice is a selection from BBC radio programmes such as "Saturday Club". This was originally a radio broadcast in the USA hosted by Andy Peebles on a station called Westwood One and consists of live performances by some of the greats of British 60s bands, sometimes performing their hits and sometimes songs they never actually released on record. The whole thing is 8 CDs worth of music recorded by the BBC. Enjoy!

This set is made from live recordings the Stones for various BBC radio programmes. There have long been rumours that the BBC were going to release such a thing but it's never happened. Well, here's your chance to get it. Apart from some great recordings of their earlier material the greatest pleasure for me was to hear how posh Mick Jagger's accent was way back before he developed that awful Dartford mockney.

Viv Stanshall's Radio Flashes
Long ago and far away there was a Radio One programme called "Top Gear" which was introduced by John Peel. When John was on annual leave, Viv Stanshall was invited to do his own show. What followed was called "Radio Flashes" and consisted of some of the funniest nonsense heard on the radio since the Goons finished.
Here is one such programme, broken down into 30 minute segments. It was first broadcast on 31st July 1971 and features Pretty Things and Greyhound.
This second programme dates from 10th August 1971 and showcases Roger Ruskin Spear (who else?), Cochise and the
Faces.
The third and unfortunately final one I possess is from August 10th 1971 and features Ian Matthews and Gaspar Lawal. No I don't know who he is either.

Sir Henry at Rawlinson End
Viv Stanshall used to appear sporadically on John Peel's radio show narrating a tale about the goings on of Sir Henry Rawlinson and his family at Rawlinson End. It was whimsical, nonsensical and totally without beginning and end. However it was extremely funny especially if you were familiar with "Morning story" on Radio 4 of which these stories were a sort of affectionate parody.
Gathered here are three hours worth of Sir Henry. The credits are as follows -

The Rutles
In my opinion, the Rutles was Neil Innes' finest hour. You can only marvel at the way he captures the essence of the Beatles so effortlessly, with tantalising hints and samples from their songs. the first LP/CD in particular is sheer brilliance, the second "Archaeology" is somewhat barrel scraping and loses a bit in quality, although the high spots are just as good as anything in the first set. So popular did it all become that Neil Innes actually formed a group to perform the Rutles songs.
